As Main Vaapas Aaunga continues its impressive run at the box office, discussions surrounding the film have expanded beyond its commercial performance. With audiences and critics praising the period drama for its emotional depth and portrayal of Partition-era Punjab, many have begun advocating for the film to be granted tax-free status in Punjab. Addressing the growing demand, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has now shared his views on the possibility.

Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, and Vedang Raina, Main Vaapas Aaunga explores the human cost of Partition through a deeply personal love story. Rather than focusing solely on historical events, the film highlights the emotional trauma, displacement, and longing experienced by ordinary people during one of the most defining chapters in Indian history.

In a recent conversation, Imtiaz Ali was asked whether the film deserves tax-free status, particularly in Punjab, given its strong cultural and historical connection to the region. Responding to the suggestion, the director acknowledged that the demand carried merit and should be considered by the relevant authorities.
“A lot of people have said that this is a story of Punjab, a story of India and also in a way of Bengal and other parts. If people feel that genuinely and if that comment of national interest is out, then there must be a process in these states to see if the film can be made tax-free and we would be looking into it,” Ali said.
The filmmaker also reflected on the storytelling approach behind Main Vaapas Aaunga. He explained that the narrative was intentionally crafted through the eyes of a single character, Keenu, portrayed by Vedang Raina. By focusing on Keenu’s personal experiences, memories, and emotional struggles, Ali aimed to make audiences connect with the larger tragedy of Partition on a deeply human level.
“I wanted to tell this story from the very narrow point of view of one romantic individual, Keenu. What he remembers, what he was thinking when he crossed the border, and what drove him to return in search of his love — I wanted the audience to experience everything through his eyes. Every moment in the film has been shaped by that perspective,” the director explained.
Released in theatres on June 12, Main Vaapas Aaunga initially witnessed a slow start at the box office. However, the film gained significant momentum during its second week, driven by positive word-of-mouth and strong audience appreciation. Despite facing competition from Cocktail 2, starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna, the film has managed to carve out a strong presence and continues to attract moviegoers across the country.
With its emotional storytelling, historical relevance, and growing box office success, Main Vaapas Aaunga has emerged as one of the most talked-about films of the year, reigniting conversations about Partition and its lasting impact on generations.
