Jaafar Jackson’s Michael has scripted box office history by becoming the highest-grossing biographical film of all time. The Michael Jackson biopic has reportedly earned an impressive USD 977 million worldwide, surpassing Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which previously held the record with a global collection of USD 975 million. The milestone marks a historic achievement for both the film and Lionsgate.

Apart from setting a new worldwide record among biopics, Michael has also become the highest-grossing musical biopic ever, overtaking the 2018 blockbuster Bohemian Rhapsody, which concluded its theatrical run with USD 911 million globally. The record-breaking success has also made Michael the biggest box office hit in Lionsgate’s history.

Released in April, the film has earned USD 607.2 million from international markets and USD 370.2 million in North America. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the biopic stars Jaafar Jackson—Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew in his acting debut. The film chronicles the legendary singer’s journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to becoming the globally celebrated “King of Pop.”

The cast also features Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Michael Jackson’s parents, Joe Jackson and Katherine Jackson. Developed with the support of several members of the Jackson family, the film presents an emotional look at the music icon’s rise to superstardom while focusing on his artistic legacy and global influence.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Michael offers an honest portrayal of the legendary performer while primarily covering his life until 1988. The narrative focuses on his extraordinary rise to fame and concludes before the controversies and allegations that emerged later in his life.

With its phenomenal worldwide success, Michael has not only rewritten box office history but has also surpassed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to become Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film ever. Reports suggest the studio is now considering moving forward with another project inspired by Michael Jackson’s life and legacy, following the overwhelming global response to the biopic.
