The controversy surrounding Thalapathy Vijay’s final cinematic outing, ‘Jana Nayagan’, has taken a severe financial turn. In a major blow to the producers, KVN Productions, it has been reported on Saturday, May 2, 2026, that the film has suffered a staggering loss of ₹70 crore in digital rights alone. This comes just weeks after the movie was leaked online on April 9, ahead of its much-anticipated theatrical release.

Prime Video Terminates ₹120 Crore Contract

According to industry reports, the streaming giant Prime Video has officially terminated its digital rights agreement for the film. Originally, the contract was signed for a record ₹120 crore. However, the platform decided to pull out following the high-definition leak of the movie and ongoing delays in securing a censor board clearance.

Faced with the cancellation, the makers reportedly approached another OTT platform, only to be met with a significantly lower offer of ₹50 crore. The ₹70 crore deficit marks one of the most substantial financial hits caused by piracy in recent Indian cinema history, particularly for a project of this magnitude.

The April 9 Leak and Multiple Arrests

The film, which serves as Vijay’s final project before his full-time transition into politics, was leaked online nearly a month ago. The breach sent shockwaves through the industry, leading to a massive crackdown by the Cyber Cell and Chennai Police.

  • Key Suspect: A freelance assistant editor named Uma Shankar was arrested after allegedly gaining unauthorized access to the footage while working on a different film at the same editing studio.
  • Legal Action: The Madras High Court recently rejected Uma Shankar’s anticipatory bail plea. He has been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the IT Act, and the Copyright Act.
  • Further Arrests: Several others, including a CCTV staff member in Chennai who allegedly posted clips on Facebook, have also been taken into custody.

Revised Release Date: May 8, 2026

Despite the legal turmoil and financial setbacks, the makers are pushing forward with the theatrical launch. ‘Jana Nayagan’ is now slated for a worldwide release on Friday, May 8, 2026. KVN Productions has issued a stern public notice warning fans that downloading, sharing, or reposting any leaked scenes will result in immediate legal prosecution. As the “last dance” for Thalapathy Vijay, the industry is watching closely to see if the theatrical box office can compensate for the digital rights disaster.
