Washington, February 1 – Jennifer Lopez made a triumphant return to the big screen with the world premiere of her new movie musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The film received a standing ovation, marking a career-defining moment for the multi-talented singer, actress, and producer.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” Lopez shared during the post-screening discussion, as reported by People.
The highly anticipated film is directed by Bill Condon, known for his work on Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Beauty and the Beast.
Lopez’s Passion for Musicals Comes Full Circle
Reflecting on her deep connection to musicals, Lopez recalled how West Side Story inspired her as a child.
“My mom would sit me in front of the TV every Thanksgiving to watch West Side Story. I was mesmerized. That’s when I knew—I wanted to do this,” she said.
“And now, this crowd has made my dream come true.”
A Powerful Story Set in Argentina’s Civil War
Kiss of the Spider Woman stars Diego Luna as a political prisoner during Argentina’s civil war in the 1980s, incarcerated alongside another man, played by Tonatiuh. The film is a reimagining of John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Terrence McNally’s Broadway adaptation of Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. The Broadway version won a Tony Award for Best Musical in 1993.
Lopez acknowledged the legacy of the original creators:
“I think of Chita Rivera, Fred Ebb, and Terrence McNally, and all the love they poured into this. It’s an honor to be part of this movie. Thank you for this moment,” she expressed.
