The comedy icon is reportedly in talks to play George Jetson in the long-awaited Warner Bros. adaptation, directed by Colin Trevorrow. It would mark Carrey’s first major live-action project outside of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

October 16, 2025: Hollywood’s long-gestating plan to bring The Jetsons to life on the big screen appears to be gaining serious momentum, with iconic actor Jim Carrey reportedly in talks to take on the lead role.

The 63-year-old Canadian-American star is in early discussions with Warner Bros. Pictures to headline a live-action adaptation of the classic 1960s animated sitcom. While his specific role is unconfirmed, Carrey is widely expected to step into the futuristic shoes of patriarch George Jetson.

In another significant development for the long-troubled project, filmmaker Colin Trevorrow, best known for helming the Jurassic World trilogy, is also in negotiations to both direct the feature and co-write the screenplay with Joe Epstein (The Idol).

A Return to Big-Budget Comedy

The news signals a potential major return to a tentpole role for Carrey, who in 2022 announced a break from acting, only to later clarify that he was simply engaging in “power-resting.” His most recent on-screen work has been playing the villainous Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in the successful Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, with his last non-franchise film being the 2016 crime drama Dark Crimes.

The live-action Jetsons film would mark the first major cinematic outing for the space-age family since the 1990 animated feature, Jetsons: The Movie.

The original Hanna-Barbera series, which premiered in 1962, followed George and Jane Jetson, their children Judy and Elroy, and their dog Astro, as they navigated life in the high-tech, floating metropolis of Orbit City—a world complete with flying cars, domestic robots, and videophones.

Warner Bros. has attempted to launch a live-action version of the property multiple times over the decades, with scrapped efforts previously involving filmmakers like Robert Rodriguez and Robert Zemeckis. The combination of Trevorrow’s blockbuster experience and Carrey’s signature comedic energy may finally be the spark needed to get this project off the ground and soaring into the future. Plot details for the new adaptation remain under wraps.
