Actor Jon Hamm has been disqualified from the Emmy Awards race in the Guest Actor in a Drama Series category for his performance in the fourth season of The Morning Show, following a submission error linked to updated Television Academy rules.

According to a report by Variety, Apple TV+ mistakenly submitted Hamm’s name in the guest actor category despite the actor previously receiving a supporting actor nomination for the same role. The error has rendered his entry ineligible under rules introduced by the Television Academy earlier this year.

Hamm appeared in only three episodes of The Morning Show Season 4, which initially appeared to make him eligible for consideration in the guest actor category. However, a rule implemented in January 2025 states that any performer who has previously been nominated or won an Emmy in either the lead or supporting acting categories for a specific role cannot later compete in a guest acting category for that same character.

The actor was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2024 for portraying media executive Paul Marks in The Morning Show. As a result, his latest submission violated the revised eligibility guidelines.

The oversight reportedly occurred during the submission process, with both Apple TV+ and the Television Academy initially failing to identify the discrepancy. When Emmy voting ballots were released on June 11, Hamm’s name appeared among the nominees in the guest actor category before the issue was flagged.

Following a review, the Television Academy disqualified the entry, meaning voters will not be able to cast votes for Hamm’s performance in that category.

Despite the setback, Hamm remains in contention for Emmy recognition elsewhere. The actor is considered a strong contender in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category for his role in Apple TV+’s acclaimed series Your Friends and Neighbors.

He is also eligible in the Character Voice-Over Performance category for lending his voice to the animated comedy Grimsburg.

Voting for the Emmy Awards is scheduled to conclude on June 22.

One Of Television’s Most Decorated Actors

Jon Hamm has built an impressive Emmy record throughout his career. The actor has received 18 Emmy nominations across multiple categories and projects, including Mad Men, Fargo, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

His only Emmy victory came in 2015 when he won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his iconic portrayal of Don Draper in Mad Men.

The revised Emmy rules have affected several high-profile performers beyond Hamm. One notable example is actress Meryl Streep, who was nominated in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category for Only Murders in the Building. Because she later appeared in fewer than half of subsequent seasons, she became ineligible to compete in the guest performer category for the same role under the updated guidelines.

What’s Next For Jon Hamm?

Hamm’s busy schedule continues despite the Emmy setback. The actor will next star in American Hostage and is expected to return for the third season of Your Friends and Neighbors, which has already been renewed.

He is also set to reprise his role as Paul Marks in the fifth season of The Morning Show, ensuring his association with the acclaimed Apple TV+ drama continues.
