June 14, 2025: At a recent Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) meeting in Chennai, actor and politician Kamal Haasan was visibly upset when a fan persistently urged him to pose with a sword. The incident occurred just days after Kamal Haasan was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu.

In a video shared by PTI on X (formerly Twitter), Kamal is seen smiling and politely refusing the fan’s repeated requests at first. The individual attempted to draw the sword from its scabbard and even tried to untie it, despite Kamal’s clear discomfort. Eventually, the actor lost his cool and scolded the fan and his companions. A police officer nearby stepped in to de-escalate the situation and ensure Kamal wasn’t forced into the photo.

Kamal could be seen sternly pointing and speaking to the group before calming down and gesturing for them to move along. He ended the interaction with a nod and a brief smile.

Many on social media praised Kamal for standing by his principles. One user noted, “He said, ‘We can keep a book and a pen in our hands, not a sword.’” Another added, “He remains with his principles always – sword down, pen and book in hand.”

Meanwhile, Kamal’s political career continues to gain momentum. Alongside five others, he received his Rajya Sabha election certificate from Returning Officer Subramani at the Chennai Secretariat. The other elected members include DMK’s Poet Salma, SR Sivalingam, P Wilson, and AIADMK’s IS Inbadurai and Dhanapal.

Kamal also remains in the spotlight for his latest film Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and co-starring Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR. The film has encountered controversy in Karnataka following Kamal’s comments about the Kannada language, prompting calls for a ban on its release in the state. On June 13, the Supreme Court sought a response from the Karnataka government to a petition seeking protection for the film’s screening. Thug Life was released elsewhere on June 6 to mixed reviews and declining box office numbers.
