Veteran actress Madhuri Dixit has spoken candidly about facing body shaming during the early years of her Bollywood journey. While promoting her latest Netflix release Maa Behen, the actress reflected on how public scrutiny of women’s appearances has existed for decades, even before the rise of social media.
Madhuri revealed that when she entered the film industry in the 1980s, many people felt she was too thin and often commented on her appearance.
“You’re a public figure, and when you put yourself out there, people are quick to form opinions. When I started out, many thought I was too skinny. They would say, ‘Isko kuch khilaao,’” she said with a laugh.
The actress pointed out that judging women based on their looks has long been a part of the entertainment industry. However, she feels fortunate that she began her career at a time when social media did not exist, making it easier to avoid constant trolling and online negativity.
Madhuri is currently receiving praise for her performance in Maa Behen, a comedy-drama that uses humour to address serious issues such as societal judgments, stereotypes and the criticism women often face simply for being themselves.
Through both her personal experiences and the themes explored in the film, Madhuri highlighted the need for society to become more accepting and less judgmental. Her comments serve as a reminder that body shaming can affect anyone, regardless of fame or success, and that confidence and self-belief are often the strongest responses to criticism.
Today, Madhuri remains one of Bollywood’s most admired stars, celebrated not only for her acting and dancing skills but also for her grace, resilience and positive outlook.
