Legendary director Imtiaz Ali made his highly anticipated return to movie theatres after a six-year hiatus with his partition-era romance, Main Vaapas Aaunga. Boasting a powerhouse ensemble cast featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina, and Naseeruddin Shah, the film opened on Friday, June 12, 2026, to overwhelmingly glowing reviews from critics, who have hailed it as a deeply moving chronicle of a fractured nation.

However, this artistic success did not immediately translate to the ticket windows. According to data provided by industry tracker Sacnilk, the film managed to net just ₹1.15 crore on its opening day, with total gross earnings standing at ₹1.38 crore.

The film launched across 2,302 shows nationwide, registering an overall first-day occupancy of 12.22%. The day began slowly, with morning shows seeing a meager 5.92% occupancy. However, a positive word-of-mouth wave began kicking in as the day progressed. Occupancy crawled up to 10.77% in the afternoon, held steady at 10.85% in the evening, and peaked at a much healthier 18.23% during prime night screenings. Regionally, Delhi-NCR commanded the lion’s share of the market with 308 screenings at a 13% occupancy rate, while Mumbai followed closely behind with 235 shows at 11% occupancy.

How the Partition Epic Compares to Career Highs and Contemporary Hits

When stacked against Imtiaz Ali’s historical box office track record, Main Vaapas Aaunga registers as the director’s lowest career opener to date. It falls dramatically short of his star-studded commercial openers like Jab Harry Met Sejal (₹15.25 crore) and Love Aaj Kal (₹12.40 crore). Even his cult-classic, content-driven dramas like Tamasha (₹10.95 crore), Rockstar (₹10.60 crore), and the gritty road-drama Highway (₹3.40 crore) managed significantly stronger starts on their respective opening Fridays.

“Imtiaz Ali’s films have historically relied on a slow-burn trajectory. While the initial numbers are small, the massive spike in late-night show attendance indicates that urban multiplex audiences are actively responding to the film’s emotional depth.” — Box Office Trade Report

The opening day also trails the personal benchmarks of its lead stars. Diljit Dosanjh’s massive mass-market outing Border 2 opened to an astronomical ₹30 crore, while Sharvari’s action-packed Vedaa (₹6.30 crore) and Vedang Raina’s thriller Jigra (₹4.55 crore) both commanded higher start lines. Within the romance genre space, it fell behind Chand Mera Dil (₹3 crore) and Do Deewane Seher Mein (₹1.25 crore), finding itself in a dead heat with Ek Din, which also opened at ₹1.15 crore.

The film’s soft launch is largely attributed to a heavily fragmented marketplace. Main Vaapas Aaunga clashed directly with Kangana Ranaut’s 26/11 survival drama Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata (which opened at ₹1 crore) and Manoj Bajpayee’s highly anticipated dramatic venture Governor. This intense distribution battle split the available screens across premium metropolitan multiplexes, making it tough for any single content-driven film to run away with a massive opening.

Despite the slow financial start, trade experts are refusing to write off the film just yet. Imtiaz Ali’s signature storytelling style inherently targets a mature, urban demographic that rarely rushes out for morning shows but tends to flood theatres over Saturday and Sunday. Backed by an exquisite musical score and deeply poetic dialogue, the creators are heavily banking on a major weekend turnaround to breathe long-term commercial life into this partition epic.
