Mamta Kulkarni Resigns from Kinnar Akhada Role, Cites Ego-Driven Politics and Past Judgments
February 10, 2025: Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni has stepped down from her position as Mahamandaleshwar in the Kinnar Akhada, citing backlash over her spiritual authenticity and her past association with Bollywood. Kulkarni’s resignation has sparked conversations about judgment, spiritual journeys, and internal conflicts within the Akhada. Her mentor, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, was also expelled, adding to the tension within the religious organization.
In a video statement, Kulkarni expressed frustration at the criticism she faced, stating, “I, Mahamandaleshwar Yamai Mamta Nandgiri, am resigning from this post. The respect given to me was for my 25 years of penance, but some people have a problem with me being Mahamandaleshwar.”

She addressed the scrutiny over her Bollywood past, adding, “I left Bollywood 25 years ago and disappeared on my own. Who stays so far away from makeup and glamour otherwise?”
Kulkarni also highlighted her spiritual journey, saying, “My Guru, Shri Chaitanya Gagangiri Maharaj, was a Siddha Mahapurush. I have done 25 years of penance with him. I don’t need to go to Kailash, Manasarovar, or the Himalayas because all worlds are already in front of me.”

Kulkarni criticized the ego-driven politics within the Akhada, stating, “These people are egoistic and disconnected from Brahma Vidya. They fight among themselves and have no understanding of true knowledge.” She also pointed out financial issues, revealing that she was asked for ₹2 lakhs for her appointment. “I didn’t have the money; another Mahamandaleshwar covered it for me,” she said.
In her closing remarks, Kulkarni gracefully relinquished her title, saying, “This post was a certificate for sharing knowledge, but perhaps it’s a sign that I should step away. I am returning it with gratitude. Namaste.”
Following her resignation, reports emerged of an attack at the Kinnar Akhara camp in Mahakumbh Nagar. A group of young men allegedly stormed the camp of Kinnar Akhara chief Jagadguru Himangi Sakhi, vandalized the premises, and attempted to take her hostage. This incident has raised serious security concerns.
