November 30, 2024: Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, has been served an ₹850 crore notice by the Chhattisgarh Civil Society (CCS) following her husband’s controversial claims regarding her cancer treatment. Navjot Singh Sidhu had earlier asserted that certain remedies helped her recover from Stage 4 cancer, despite doctors giving her only “40 days” to live.

The Controversy

The CCS, through its convenor Dr. Kuldeep Solanki, accused Sidhu’s statements of spreading misinformation and potentially endangering the lives of cancer patients. Speaking to Business Standard, Solanki said, “False claims like this confuse people and undermine their trust in allopathic medicine. Some patients may even stop their treatments, putting their lives at risk.”

The organization has demanded that Navjot Kaur Sidhu present evidence to substantiate her husband’s claims within a week. If she fails to do so, legal action may follow. The CCS also urged her to address the allegations publicly to clarify her position.

What Did Navjot Singh Sidhu Claim?

On November 21, Navjot Singh Sidhu shared his wife’s cancer recovery story at a press conference, attributing her recovery to dietary changes and “traditional remedies.” He claimed cancer feeds on sugar and inflammation caused by certain foods like milk, wheat, refined flour, and sugar. He advised cutting out these items, along with processed foods like samosas and jalebis.

“By eliminating sugar and carbohydrates, cancer cells die automatically,” Sidhu asserted, citing his extensive personal research on the subject. He also mentioned remedies like turmeric and neem as contributing factors to her recovery.

Backlash from Medical Experts

Sidhu’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism from the medical community. The Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr. C.S. Pramesh, issued a statement signed by 262 oncologists, stating that such claims are not backed by scientific evidence.

“Parts of the video imply that starving the cancer by avoiding dairy and sugar, and consuming turmeric and neem, cured her ‘incurable’ cancer. These claims lack any high-quality evidence to support them,” the statement read.

Sidhu’s Clarification

Responding to the backlash, Navjot Singh Sidhu posted a clarification on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Doctors are like God to me, and they have always been our priority. We worked collaboratively with medical professionals throughout the process.”

Despite his clarification, the controversy has highlighted the growing debate over misinformation in healthcare and the potential dangers of unverified claims.
