Acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has stepped forward to address the intensely polarized public discourse surrounding nepotism in Bollywood, just weeks before launching his son, Vir Hirani, into mainstream entertainment.

The 20-year-old debutant is set to play one of the titular leads alongside veteran actor Arshad Warsi in the highly anticipated cyber-crime comedy series Pritam And Pedro, which serves as Rajkumar Hirani’s formal maiden voyage as a creator and showrunner in the digital space. Speaking exclusively about introducing his son at a time when public scrutiny regarding industry privilege is at an all-time high, the 3 Idiots director maintained that professional longevity cannot be inherited.

“If that’s what he chooses to do in life, it’s also not fair to stop him,” Hirani stated during an exclusive trade briefing. Emphasizing the brutal, democratic nature of commercial cinema, the director argued that showbiz functions under entirely different parameters than traditional legacy professions. While a doctor or lawyer can pass down a running practice or physical infrastructure to protect a less-skilled heir, Hirani pointed out that the entertainment economy offers no such safety nets. A star parent can provide an initial platform or a well-publicized launchpad, but the ultimate survival of any actor is entirely dependent on the paying audience’s final verdict.

“You can’t cheat or compromise with your film or show. If you take somebody who’s not good enough, it’s your own work that will suffer. Even if I were directing it myself, Vir would still have to audition to land the part.”Rajkumar Hirani, Exclusive Media Briefing

The Audition Grind Behind the Dynamic Misfit Comedy

Fascinatingly, the filmmaker revealed that Pritam And Pedro was never conceptualized as a bespoke vehicle to launch his son. Vir was actively circulating his portfolio, sitting through routine look tests, and reading indie screenplays across Mumbai when he independently discovered that his father’s banner was developing a long-format OTT show. Rather than approaching his father directly, Vir quietly contacted co-producer Sahil C. Khosla to secure a meeting with director Avinash Arun. Upon learning of his son’s interest, Rajkumar Hirani mandated that Vir go through the exact same rigorous, multi-round audition process as every other competing actor to protect the creative integrity of the project.

Set against the scenic backdrop of Goa, the narrative chronicles the chaotic partnership between Pedro (Arshad Warsi), an instinct-driven, old-school police officer sent to the cyber cell as a punishment transfer, and Pritam (Vir Hirani), a brilliant young tech-geek and hacker. Together, the mismatched duo must track down a dangerous cybercriminal played by Vikrant Massey. Interestingly, while the series marks Vir’s official debut in a lead role, it is technically his second tryst with the camera he previously made a blink-and-miss cameo as the toddler son of Warsi’s iconic character ‘Circuit’ in the climax of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. With the series arriving on July 3, the project marks a nostalgic reunion for Warsi and Hirani, while testing whether the youngest Hirani can carve his own distinct identity on screen.
