Renowned choreographer and filmmaker Remo D’Souza has finally addressed the long-standing speculation surrounding his religious conversion.

On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the ABCD director clarified that his transition from Hinduism to Christianity was a personal decision made during his teenage years and was entirely unrelated to his marriage to Lizelle D’Souza. Born as Ramesh Gopi Nair, Remo revealed that his spiritual journey began long before he entered the glitz and glamour of Mumbai’s film industry.

The Jamnagar Connection: A Teenage Transition

Speaking candidly in a recent interview with Curly Tales, Remo shared that the conversion took place when he was just 15 years old while living in Jamnagar, Gujarat. At the time, he was deeply immersed in church community service, organizing shows, and collecting charity for the underprivileged. “I used to do a lot of work for the church… One day Father Davis came and said, ‘You do so much for the church, why don’t you convert?'” Remo recalled. He further mentioned that his father was surprisingly supportive of the choice, giving him his blessing with the simple request: “Don’t change my name, but do what you want to.”

Choosing Love Over Convention: Life with Lizelle

The interview also touched upon the early days of his relationship with Lizelle, revealing that the couple defied societal norms of the late 90s. Remo and Lizelle admitted to having a live-in relationship and even welcoming their first son before officially tying the knot in 1999.

  • Family Pressure: Lizelle shared that her father strongly disapproved of their arrangement at the time, as live-in relationships were considered a major taboo.
  • Secret Beginnings: Remo’s parents were initially unaware of their relationship as the couple navigated the struggles of building a career in Mumbai while maintaining their private home life.

Professional Milestones and Current Scrutiny

While Remo continues to be a force in the industry with hits like Street Dancer 3D and Race 3, his personal life has recently been under the scanner due to unrelated legal hurdles. The couple recently made headlines for reacting to a ₹11.96 crore cheating accusation involving a dance troupe, which they have vehemently denied. Despite these challenges, Remo remains focused on his craft, having recently been in the news for his work on the choreography for Housefull 5. By clearing the air on his conversion, the filmmaker hopes to put an end to the “misinformation” that has followed his marriage for over two decades.
