New Delhi: The much-anticipated trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil reboot has been released by Sony, offering fans a bold and unsettling reimagining of the iconic horror franchise. Directed by Zach Cregger, the film promises a significant departure from earlier adaptations, focusing more on raw fear and survival rather than action-heavy storytelling.
A Fresh Story Without Familiar Faces
Unlike previous installments, this reboot will not feature fan-favourite characters such as Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine. Instead, the narrative centres on an ordinary courier tasked with delivering a package. What begins as a routine job soon spirals into chaos as he becomes trapped in a deadly outbreak in Raccoon City.
The trailer hints at a grounded, tension-driven horror experience, shifting the tone of the franchise towards psychological dread and realism.
New Creative Direction for a Legacy Franchise
The screenplay has been co-written by Cregger along with Shay Hatten. Together, they aim to redefine the Resident Evil universe by introducing new characters and a standalone storyline while preserving the franchise’s signature horror elements.
Originally launched as a video game series by Capcom in 1994, Resident Evil has grown into one of the most successful horror franchises globally. It has spawned multiple sequels, remakes, and spin-offs, with the latest game release being Resident Evil Requiem.
A Franchise with a Strong Cinematic Legacy
The film series began in 2002, starring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez, and went on to include several sequels, concluding with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in 2017. A reboot titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts, followed in 2021.
Collectively, the films have grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide, cementing the franchise’s massive global appeal.
Production and Release Details
The new film is produced and co-financed by Constantin Film, alongside Vertigo Entertainment and PlayStation Productions. Key producers include Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, and Miri Yoon.
With a darker tone, fresh characters, and a reimagined storyline, the film is set to bring a new dimension to the beloved franchise.
Release Date
The Resident Evil reboot is scheduled to hit theatres on September 18, 2026.
