Veteran playback singer S Janaki, fondly known as the “Nightingale of South India,” passed away at the age of 88 in Mysuru on Saturday following age-related health complications. She had been admitted to a private hospital after developing breathing difficulties on Friday night.

According to PTI, Janaki breathed her last after being hospitalized with respiratory complications linked to her advanced age. Her passing marks the end of one of the most remarkable careers in Indian music history.

A Musical Legacy That Spanned Six Decades

S Janaki’s extraordinary career lasted for more than 60 years, during which she recorded over 48,000 songs across nearly 20 Indian languages. Her versatile voice graced films, television, radio and music albums in languages including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Odia, Tulu, Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali.

Widely admired for her expressive singing and remarkable vocal range, Janaki collaborated with some of India’s most celebrated composers and filmmakers, leaving an enduring impact on multiple regional film industries.

Honours and Recognition

Throughout her illustrious career, S Janaki received numerous accolades, including:

  • Four National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer
  • Thirty-three State Film Awards across various Indian languages

In 2013, she declined the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, saying the recognition had come too late in her career. At the time, she had also expressed that her contribution to Indian music deserved the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

Despite gradually reducing her professional commitments due to health concerns, Janaki remained associated with playback singing for several decades, continuing to inspire generations of musicians and fans alike.

Hospitalisation Before Her Demise

According to PTI, Janaki experienced breathing-related complications on Friday night and was admitted to a private hospital in Mysuru. She later passed away due to age-related ailments.
