In a revelation that has stunned fans and the film industry alike, Sanjay Dutt shared the extraordinary origins of his newly announced sequel, Khalnayak Returns.

During the official launch event on Friday, April 24, 2026, the veteran actor disclosed that the blueprint for the film was forged during his time in prison. Dutt, who reprises his legendary role as “Ballu,” explained that the idea wasn’t born in a high-end writer’s room, but within the walls of a jail cell where he engaged with fellow inmates about the future of the 1993 classic.

4,000 Pages of Inspiration: The “Inmate Collective” Script

Dutt recounted a fascinating process where he turned to approximately 4,000 inmates to gauge interest in a sequel. According to the actor, the response was a unanimous “yes,” prompting him to ask each individual to write a single page outlining what they would want to see in a new Khalnayak story. “It took me a while to read all 4,000 pages,” Dutt admitted, noting that the diverse perspectives of the inmates provided a gritty, authentic layer to the upcoming film’s narrative. The actor eventually shared these collective ideas with original director Subhash Ghai during a parole period, leading to the greenlighting of the project.

Subhash Ghai’s Blessing and the “New Ballu” Avatar

While Subhash Ghai helmed the 1993 original—which featured Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff—he will serve as a creative consultant for the sequel, which is being driven by the passion of Sanjay and his wife, Maanyata Dutt. Ghai expressed immense confidence in the project, stating that the sequel has the potential to surpass the original’s impact. The first look, unveiled alongside the announcement, showcases a 66-year-old Dutt in an intense, weathered “Ballu” avatar, reflecting the 32-year gap since the character first captured the nation’s imagination.

Sanjay Dutt’s Power-Packed 2026 Calendar

The announcement of Khalnayak Returns comes during a prolific streak for the actor. Following his massive success in Dhurandhar: The Revenge earlier this year, Dutt is currently one of the busiest stars in Indian cinema. Beyond the return of Ballu, his 2026 slate includes the highly anticipated pan-Indian project KD: The Devil, the historical epic Raja Shivaji, and the thriller Aakhri Sawal. As the “Khalnayak” persona returns to the big screen, it appears Dutt is leaning into his “tough guy” legacy while embracing stories that resonate with the raw reality of his own life experiences.
