Shraddha Kapoor’s upcoming biographical drama Eetha has landed in controversy shortly after the release of its first teaser. The film, based on the life of legendary Tamasha and Lavani icon Vithabai Narayangaonkar, is facing objections over its title, with members of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the folk artist’s family questioning whether the chosen name truly reflects her legacy.

According to reports, the NCP’s Film and Cultural Department has expressed concerns that the title Eetha does not appropriately honour Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s immense contribution to Maharashtra’s folk theatre and Lavani tradition. The department has suggested that the film should instead have been titled Vitha or Vithabai to better represent the legendary performer’s identity and cultural significance.
The objections have also received support from Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s family. Her sons, Kailash Narayangaonkar and Rajesh Narayangaonkar, along with grandson Mohit Narayangaonkar, have reportedly backed the demand for a title change. Babasaheb Patil, Maharashtra State President of the NCP’s Film and Cultural Department, stated that preserving Vithabai’s dignity and accurately representing her legacy is a matter of cultural responsibility.
So far, director Laxman Utekar and production house Maddock Films have not issued any official statement regarding the controversy. The silence has further intensified public curiosity as discussions continue across social media and within Maharashtra’s cultural circles.
Despite the ongoing debate, excitement surrounding the film remains high. The teaser showcases Shraddha Kapoor’s remarkable transformation into Vithabai Narayangaonkar and recreates one of the most extraordinary episodes from the performer’s life. In the dramatic sequence, Vithabai is shown delivering her baby backstage after going into labour during a performance before returning to the stage to complete the show, highlighting her extraordinary dedication to her art.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Eetha also stars Randeep Hooda and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub in pivotal roles. The film has been shot across several locations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai’s Madh Island, Solapur, Satara, Nashik, Aundhewadi and Bhor. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on August 28 and also marks Shraddha Kapoor’s reunion with producer Dinesh Vijan after the blockbuster success of the Stree franchise.
