Aamir Khan–backed period drama to hit theatres on August 13
February 10, 2026: Aamir Khan Productions has officially announced that Lahore 1947, starring Sunny Deol, will release in cinemas on August 13, 2026, aligning with the Independence Day holiday week. The period drama marks a rare and significant collaboration, bringing together Sunny Deol, director Rajkumar Santoshi and producer Aamir Khan for the first time. Aamir Khan described the film as one of Dharmendra’s favourite scripts, adding an emotional resonance to the project and linking it to the veteran actor’s legacy.
Set against the backdrop of Partition, Lahore 1947 is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The film features a strong ensemble cast including Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Karan Deol, Abhimanyu Singh and Ali Fazal. Music is composed by A R Rahman with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, while Rajkumar Santoshi directs the historical drama, promising an intense narrative rooted in trauma, resilience and identity.
The August 13 release places the film in one of the most lucrative theatrical windows of the year and has already sparked box-office buzz, with reports suggesting a possible clash with Salman Khan’s Battle of Galwan. Expectations are high due to Sunny Deol’s recent success with Border 2, Preity Zinta’s return to the big screen, and the heavyweight creative team behind the film. As Independence Day 2026 approaches, Lahore 1947 is shaping up as a major patriotic and historical release of the season.
