Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey has received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) without any cuts or modifications. The decision marks a major contrast to the discussions that surrounded the director’s Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer during its Indian release in 2023.
According to sources, the CBFC approved The Odyssey in its original version. No scenes, dialogues, or visuals were reportedly altered before certification.
However, the film has been awarded an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate. As a result, only viewers aged 18 years and above will be allowed to watch it in theatres across India.
The censor certificate was issued on July 9. It also confirms the film’s runtime as 172 minutes and 33 seconds, making it nearly 2 hours and 53 minutes long.
The Odyssey Released Without Any CBFC Cuts
Christopher Nolan’s latest film will reach Indian audiences exactly as it was made. Unlike many international releases that undergo edits for theatrical release in India, The Odyssey has cleared the certification process without any reported changes.
Although the film carries an Adults Only rating, the CBFC did not ask the makers to remove or modify any scene. Therefore, audiences will be able to watch Nolan’s original vision on the big screen.
The decision is likely to be welcomed by fans, especially after the debate surrounding Oppenheimer three years ago.
Why Oppenheimer’s India Release Sparked Debate
When Oppenheimer was released in India in 2023, one particular sequence became a major talking point.
A nude scene featuring Florence Pugh was digitally altered in the Indian theatrical version using CGI to add a black dress. The change triggered widespread discussion on social media, with many viewers calling it an example of self-censorship.
Reports later claimed that the modification was made voluntarily by the studio and filmmakers to avoid possible certification issues. It was reportedly not ordered by the CBFC.
Officially, the censor board only required two changes in Oppenheimer. These included adding mandatory anti-smoking warnings and muting one expletive while removing it from the subtitles.
The film also faced criticism over an intimate scene in which verses from the Bhagavad Gita were recited. Several viewers and organisations objected to the sequence, describing it as inappropriate.
