Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri says India has sufficient fuel reserves
June 8, 2026: India is well-positioned to handle global energy disruptions and currently has fuel reserves equivalent to 76-80 days of consumption, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said. In an interview with CNN-News18, Puri assured that there is no immediate risk to the country’s energy security despite ongoing tensions in West Asia and concerns over the Strait of Hormuz. He also expressed confidence that crude oil prices are unlikely to remain elevated for an extended period.
Puri said India has adequate strategic petroleum reserves, refinery inventories and commercial fuel stocks to manage a temporary disruption in oil supplies, even if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for several weeks. He noted that the government has diversified its energy sourcing strategy beyond the Gulf region and is strengthening supplies through partnerships with countries such as the UAE, while also expecting additional gas supplies from Mozambique.
However, the minister cautioned that a prolonged conflict spreading beyond the current region could pose serious challenges for the global economy. He said a short-term disruption can be managed through existing reserves and alternative supply arrangements, but a crisis lasting several more months could trigger wider economic consequences. Despite these concerns, Puri maintained that India’s energy position remains stable and secure in the near term.
