Airline launches investigation after staff leisure travel benefits allegedly exploited
March 15, 2026: Air India has launched a major internal investigation after uncovering widespread misuse of its Staff Leisure Travel (SLT) policy. The benefit, designed to provide subsidised travel to employees and their families, was reportedly being exploited for unauthorised purposes. Internal audits found instances where staff allegedly arranged travel for individuals who were not eligible under the policy, leading to concerns about revenue loss for the airline.
Following the findings, the airline has introduced stricter controls on its digital booking system and revised eligibility checks. New verification measures include mandatory document uploads and closer monitoring of family relationships listed under employee benefits. In an internal memo, the airline warned that any further violations of the travel policy could lead to suspension of travel privileges or even termination of employment.
Employees found to have misused the scheme have been asked to repay the amount obtained through improper claims, while several staff members have reportedly faced penalties. While tightening enforcement, the airline clarified that the objective is to protect the benefit for employees who use it legitimately. The issue has also raised concerns about corporate governance within the organisation, and similar audits may be carried out across other airlines linked to the Tata Group.
