Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s comments on damage and theft of tap water connections sparked a sharp response

June 5, 2026: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday highlighted concerns over theft and damage to tap water infrastructure while speaking at a World Environment Day programme in Lucknow. Referring to the “Har Ghar Jal” initiative, he said some people were stealing taps or leaving them open, stressing that citizens must take responsibility for protecting public assets and preventing water wastage.

During the event, the chief minister also spoke about environmental conservation under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. He warned that climate change could disrupt weather patterns, leading to excessive rainfall, drought and possible food shortages. Adityanath said such challenges could have a serious impact on farmers and agricultural incomes, making environmental protection a collective responsibility.

Soon after the remarks, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav responded with a strongly worded post on X. Without naming the chief minister directly, Yadav accused political opponents of blaming others for their own failures and suggested the comments reflected growing political desperation. The exchange has further intensified the ongoing political rivalry between the ruling BJP and the Samajwadi Party ahead of upcoming political contests in the state.
