SP leader meets BJP MLA Anupama Jaiswal after protest mishap, stresses harmony and goodwill

April 28, 2026: Akhilesh Yadav visited a hospital in Lucknow to check on the health of Anupama Jaiswal, who suffered burn injuries during a protest last week. The incident occurred when Jaiswal attempted to burn an effigy of the SP leader during a demonstration over the women’s reservation issue. Yadav met the MLA and her family members, enquiring about her condition and wishing her a speedy recovery.

Sharing his thoughts, Yadav emphasised the importance of harmony over political differences. He stated that society should avoid “flames of discord” and instead promote goodwill and mutual respect. Jaiswal’s husband described the visit as an act of human sensitivity and democratic courtesy, noting that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had also intervened to ensure proper medical care.

The incident took place during a BJP-led protest in Lucknow, where effigies of opposition leaders were being set on fire. An explosion-like flare reportedly caused flames to leap toward Jaiswal’s face, leaving her with significant burns. Doctors said around 75% of her face was affected, with injuries also reported on her ear, forehead, and eyes. The episode has drawn attention to safety concerns during political protests, even as leaders across parties call for restraint.
