Proposed law aims to settle long-standing dispute and prevent future changes to Andhra Pradesh’s capital status
April 1, 2026: A bill to formally recognise Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The move aligns with a key demand of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and is seen as a major step towards resolving the long-standing capital issue in the state.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was introduced by Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai. The legislation aims to ensure that Amaravati remains the only capital, preventing any future attempts to alter its status. This comes after the previous government led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had proposed a three-capital model.
The bill is also being viewed as a significant political win for Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who has long advocated for Amaravati as the state’s capital. After being introduced, the bill was accepted through a voice vote by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, marking a key legislative step towards ending uncertainty over the state’s administrative centre.
