Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the flood and rain situation in Maharashtra and Gujarat
July 8, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday reviewed the heavy rain situation in Maharashtra and Gujarat by speaking separately with Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Bhupendra Patel. During the conversations, Shah assured both states of all possible assistance from the Centre to deal with the rain-related challenges. The review came as incessant rainfall disrupted normal life across several regions, particularly in Mumbai and southern Gujarat.
Mumbai continued to experience heavy rainfall, affecting suburban train services and causing inconvenience to commuters. Long-distance trains towards Gujarat remained disrupted due to waterlogging, while services on the Mumbai-Pune route were still recovering after recent landslides. Civic authorities also confirmed that Tulsi Lake, one of Mumbai’s key water reservoirs, began overflowing following continuous rainfall. The India Meteorological Department forecast intermittent light to moderate rain across Mumbai and nearby suburbs.
Southern Gujarat witnessed extremely heavy rainfall, with Surat district among the worst affected. Five people lost their lives in rain-related incidents, while nearly 2,100 residents were shifted to safer locations from flooded areas. Authorities also suspended classes in schools and colleges across Surat and Navsari districts due to the severe weather. Officials said rescue and relief operations are continuing as the administration monitors the evolving situation.
