Union Home Minister on two-day visit ahead of Assembly polls

February 20, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will begin a two-day visit to Assam from Friday, during which he will launch the ‘Vibrant Villages Programme’ (VVP) in Cachar district and address a public meeting. Shah is scheduled to visit the Natanpur border outpost and formally launch the initiative at Natanpur village, officials said. The programme focuses on strengthening border infrastructure and improving livelihoods in remote areas.

This marks Shah’s third visit to the poll-bound state since late December, as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeks to retain power for a third consecutive term. He is also expected to travel to Agartala before returning to Guwahati later in the evening. On Saturday, Shah will attend the CRPF’s annual day parade at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati.

During the visit, he will lay the foundation stone for the new campus of the 10th Assam Police Battalion at Kasutoli in Sonapur. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Shah’s visit, stating that several initiatives would be dedicated to the people of the state. Assam, which has 126 Assembly constituencies, is expected to go to polls in March-April, with senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making frequent visits.
