Sri Vijaya Puram: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration on Saturday created history by unfurling the world’s largest underwater national flag, earning a new Guinness World Records title.
The record-setting event took place at Radhanagar Beach on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island), where a massive Indian Tricolour measuring approximately 60 by 40 metres was deployed beneath the sea in a carefully coordinated operation.
Large-Scale Coordinated Effort
The ambitious feat involved extensive planning and execution, with personnel from the Andaman and Nicobar Police, Forest Department, Indian Navy, and Indian Coast Guard working alongside trained scuba divers from multiple diving centres.
More than 200 divers participated in the underwater unfurling, making it one of the largest collaborative marine exercises of its kind in the country.
Among them were three school students — Fateh Jahaan Singh (16), Lavanya Eira (15), and Ranvijay Singh (14) — who stood out as the youngest participants in the historic attempt.
Record Officially Recognised
At 10:35 am, Guinness World Records adjudicator Rishi Nath formally confirmed the achievement and presented the certificate to Lieutenant Governor D K Joshi.
Senior officials, including Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar and Director General of Police H S Dhaliwal, were also present to witness the milestone moment.
Praising the teams involved, Joshi described the achievement as a testament to coordination, dedication, and the spirit of innovation.
Boost to Tourism and Global Recognition
Officials said the record highlights the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ growing reputation as a hub for adventure tourism and marine activities. Events like these not only showcase the region’s natural beauty but also place it on the global map for unique and large-scale initiatives.
Participants also shared their excitement. Fateh Jahaan Singh, a Class 12 student from Gurugram, described the experience as unforgettable, saying he was in awe of the underwater world and proud to be part of the event.
Lavanya and Ranvijay echoed similar sentiments, calling the moment of holding the national flag underwater both emotional and exhilarating.
More Records on the Horizon
The administration is set to attempt another Guinness World Record on Sunday — for the “Tallest Human Stack” — at the Lighthouse dive site on Swaraj Dweep, with senior officials expected to attend.
