Death after alleged misuse of ‘arishtam’ raises questions over regulation and safety of Ayurvedic products

April 18, 2026: A man’s death in Kerala has triggered outrage after he was reportedly hospitalised on April 7 at Mananthavady Medical College Hospital with severe symptoms, including vomiting blood, before being shifted to Kozhikode, where he later died. Hospital authorities indicated that excessive alcohol consumption combined with the intake of ‘arishtam’ may have led to fatal complications.

Locals alleged that the product, traditionally marketed as an Ayurvedic medicine, was being misused as an intoxicant, especially among tribal communities. They claimed that people from nearby areas frequently purchased it from Sree Vinayaka Pharmaceuticals, even on dry days. Residents also alleged that the outlet was operating without proper authorisation, medical supervision, or a licensed pharmacist, despite repeated complaints.

Following protests by locals and public representatives, police shut down the shop and began collecting statements from consumers along with hospital records. Authorities said a case would be registered soon, and samples of the ‘arishtam’ would be sent for laboratory testing to check for intoxicating substances. Local representatives have assured a detailed inquiry, while residents continue to demand strict action against illegal outlets, citing serious risks to vulnerable communities.
