The Assam Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill after sharp protests from opposition parties

May 27, 2026: The Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill amid strong opposition protests and heated exchanges inside the House. The proposed legislation, officially titled ‘The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, 2026 Bill’, was taken up for discussion and passage during the ongoing Assembly session.

Opposition parties criticised the move, calling the Bill part of the BJP’s “political agenda” and warning that it could affect the rights, customs, and traditions of several communities. Opposition MLAs demanded that the legislation be referred to a select committee for broader consultation and detailed examination before implementation.

Leaders from opposition benches argued that a reform of such legal and social significance required discussions with legal experts, civil society organisations, and representatives of different communities. Despite the protests and demands for further scrutiny, the Bill was passed by the Assembly, marking a significant political and legislative development in Assam.
