Himanta Biswa Sarma calls it a “historic” election as Assam witnesses unprecedented voter participation.
April 10, 2026: Assam registered a record voter turnout of 85.91 per cent in its Assembly elections, the highest in its history. Female participation stood at 85.96 per cent, slightly higher than male turnout at 84.80 per cent, while third gender turnout was 36.84 per cent. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that the surge reflects growing public engagement in the democratic process.
Sarma noted a shift in voting trends, with communities that traditionally recorded lower turnout participating more actively this time. He suggested that the increased participation across groups could benefit the BJP-led NDA, though he refrained from making definitive predictions. He also pointed to early signals from key constituencies, including Muslim-majority seats, where NDA allies and the BJP are reportedly witnessing strong competition.
Calling the election “historic,” Sarma said the high turnout represents a larger movement to protect Assam’s identity, culture, and values. He praised voters for recognising the importance of their vote, adding that in some areas participation reached as high as 95 per cent. With counting scheduled for May 4, the record turnout has set the stage for a closely watched and potentially decisive outcome.
