A petition filed in the Supreme Court seeks an independent investigation into the alleged encounter killing of Bharat Tiwari

June 22, 2026: The alleged encounter killing of Bharat Tiwari in Bihar has reached the Supreme Court, with a petition seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident. Filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, the plea demands registration of an FIR against the police personnel involved and calls for the investigation to be conducted under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge.

According to the petition, the circumstances surrounding the encounter raise serious concerns about the legality and transparency of the police action. The petitioner has argued that an independent probe is necessary to ensure accountability and public confidence in the investigation. The plea has also sought scrutiny of similar encounter and “half-encounter” cases reported from different states.

The issue has sparked political debate as well. Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi defended the police, stating that officers often face dangerous situations while carrying out such operations. However, critics have questioned the circumstances of the encounter and demanded a fair and transparent inquiry. The matter is now expected to proceed through the legal process, with attention focused on whether the Supreme Court agrees to hear the petition and orders further investigation.
