The Election Commission is set to announce the schedule for the 2025 Bihar Assembly polls after Dussehra in early October. The voting itself will be held in November to accommodate major festivals like Diwali and Chhath Puja, with a new Assembly sworn in by November 22.

September 22, 2025: Sources say that the Election Commission of India (ECI) would soon release the timetable for the 2025 Bihar election. Voting is likely to happen in two to three stages in the first and second weeks of November. The new Assembly must be in place by November 22, when the current House’s tenure ends.

The whole ECI bench will visit Bihar in the last week of September to check on preparations for the elections before the announcement. The timetable will be made carefully so that it doesn’t conflict with big holidays like Diwali and Chhath, which are in late October. The formal poll notification will also be possible after the final electoral roll for the state is issued on September 30.

The election will be a high-stakes fight between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Alliance, which is led by the Janata Dal (United) and the opposition Mahagathbandhan, which is led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress.

The elections will take place as the ECI is doing a “special intensive revision” of the state’s voter list, which means that more than 65 lakh names were taken off of it. The ECI said the change was only a way to clean up the system, while the opposition said it was an intentional ploy to keep voters from voting. The Supreme Court has let the procedure go on, but it has said that it might be stopped if any wrongdoing is detected.
