Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on inflation, economic policy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Rae Bareli visit

May 20, 2026: A fresh political confrontation has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress after controversial remarks made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi during his visit to Rae Bareli triggered strong reactions from the ruling party. The row revolves around criticism aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over inflation, foreign visits and the government’s economic policies. Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput defended Gandhi’s statements, saying they reflected growing public concerns over rising prices and the impact of inflation on farmers and the middle class.

Rajput argued that governments must be held accountable for the increasing cost of essential commodities, including fuel and food items. According to the Congress, economic decisions and trade policies under the current government have added pressure on common citizens. The opposition maintained that questioning inflation and economic management is part of democratic accountability and public discourse.

The BJP, however, strongly rejected the allegations and accused the Congress of misleading the public with distorted claims. BJP spokesperson RP Singh highlighted welfare schemes, infrastructure development and economic reforms introduced under the Modi government as proof of governance success. The debate also extended to fuel pricing, crude oil fluctuations and economic comparisons between previous governments and the current administration. Political observers believe the latest exchange reflects the growing polarization in Indian politics over governance and economic issues.
