Rane links Bakra Eid to eco-friendly festival campaigns
May 25, 2026: Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Nitesh Rane stirred controversy after suggesting that Bakra Eid should be celebrated “virtually.” Referring to campaigns encouraging people to celebrate Holi without wasting water and Diwali without firecrackers, Rane said similar appeals should be made during Bakrid as well. He suggested that people could place a picture of a goat on a computer and perform the sacrifice virtually.
The BJP leader also alleged that cow meat is often sold in the name of goat meat during the festival. He warned that strict action would be taken against cow slaughter and cattle smuggling. His remarks quickly triggered political reactions and criticism on social media, with opposition leaders accusing him of making provocative statements.
During his remarks, Rane also targeted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, calling him a “Pakistani agent” and alleging that he speaks using scripts designed to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The comments added to the political controversy surrounding his statements ahead of Bakra Eid celebrations.
