BJP strengthens grip in Assam as Goswami outpaces Congress’ Gaurav Gogoi in a high-profile contest.
May 4, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a significant victory in the Jorhat constituency of Assam, with Hitendra Nath Goswami defeating Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi by a margin of over 21,000 votes. Goswami maintained a steady lead throughout the counting process, ultimately sealing a comfortable win in what was considered a high-profile electoral contest.
A five-term MLA, Goswami built an early advantage during counting and continued to widen the gap as rounds progressed. After 12 rounds, he had already polled over 59,000 votes compared to Gogoi’s nearly 39,500. For Gogoi, this election marked his Assembly debut, despite his experience as a Lok Sabha MP and his strong performance in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
The result reflects the BJP’s broader dominance in Assam, where the party is trending towards another decisive victory. With early figures indicating the BJP crossing the majority mark in the 126-member Assembly, the party appears set for a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Counting continues across the state, but Jorhat has already emerged as a key win for the ruling party.
