Bangladesh Nationalist Party signals optimism over ties with Bharatiya Janata Party-led West Bengal.

May 6, 2026: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has congratulated the Bharatiya Janata Party following its electoral victory in West Bengal, expressing hope for improved regional cooperation. BNP leader Azizul Baree Helal praised the party’s performance under Suvendu Adhikari, suggesting the outcome could strengthen ties between India and Bangladesh.

A key focus of the BNP’s response was the long-pending Teesta Water Sharing Treaty, which has remained unresolved for years. The party alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government under Mamata Banerjee had stalled progress, and expressed optimism that the new dispensation could help move negotiations forward.

The Teesta dispute has been a major sticking point in bilateral relations, despite agreements like the Ganga Water Treaty. With both New Delhi and Dhaka keen on resolving water-sharing issues, BNP leaders believe the political shift in Bengal could accelerate talks and improve cooperation on transboundary river management.

Despite ideological differences, the BNP emphasised that shared national interests—particularly on water resources and regional stability—could bring alignment between stakeholders. The development marks a notable moment of diplomatic optimism amid a historically complex relationship.
