Heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding, road collapses and traffic disruption across Ghaziabad
July 9, 2026: Ghaziabad was hit by heavy rainfall on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recording 164 mm of rain at Kamla Nehru Nagar and 134 mm at Hindon in the past 24 hours. The downpour submerged roads, caused severe traffic congestion and disrupted normal life across the city and neighbouring Noida. One of the most serious incidents occurred in Vasundhara Sector 13, where a section of road collapsed next to an under-construction basement. A parked car and a scooter fell into the crater, while a nearby electricity pole tilted dangerously. No injuries were reported, though both vehicles were badly damaged.
Flooding worsened in several residential areas, with videos showing people using boats to move through waterlogged streets in Vasundhara. In view of the heavy rainfall, the Ghaziabad district administration declared a holiday for government schools. Residents blamed poor drainage infrastructure for the widespread flooding, alleging that the city’s drainage system failed to handle the intense rainfall.
The rain also disrupted daily livelihoods. Salman, a milk supplier, said he could not deliver milk in several areas because roads were submerged. Another resident, Akbar Ali, criticised the authorities, claiming drain-cleaning efforts were merely an “eyewash.” He said knee-deep water had flooded roads and roadside shops, disrupting the supply of essential goods as residents struggled with the continuing impact of the heavy rain.
