A two-and-a-half-year-old child falls into an open borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district, triggering a high-intensity rescue operation.
April 10, 2026: A two-and-a-half-year-old child fell into a deep borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district on Thursday evening, prompting an urgent rescue operation. The incident occurred in Jhalaria village under Badnagar tehsil when the child, identified as Bhagirath, reportedly slipped into the open borewell while playing near a field. Officials said the child is stuck at a depth of around 60 feet, with water present at the bottom.
Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police and district administration were immediately mobilised. According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer Mahendra Singh Parmar, oxygen is being supplied through a pipe and the child’s movements are being monitored with a camera. Heavy machinery, including JCB and Poklen machines, is being used to dig a parallel pit to reach the child safely, despite challenges posed by the narrow borewell.
Senior officials, including District Magistrate Roshan Kumar Singh and Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma, are overseeing the operation. The child’s family, originally from Pali district of Rajasthan, had been staying nearby for grazing livestock. The incident has once again raised concerns over the dangers of open borewells, as authorities continue round-the-clock efforts to rescue the child safely.
