Court indicts Lalu Prasad Yadav, family and 40 others
January 9, 2026: In a major development in the “land-for-job” scam, a court has framed charges against RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, members of his family and 40 others for allegedly accepting land in exchange for railway jobs. The court observed that several individuals were appointed in the railway sector while land belonging to them or their family members was taken as consideration.
Out of the original 98 accused named in the case, charges against 52 have been dropped, while proceedings against five others were closed following their deaths. The court noted that Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family were part of the alleged criminal conspiracy, paving the way for the trial to move forward.
The next hearing, scheduled for January 29, 2026, will formally proceed with the framed charges. The case has once again triggered political sparring, with allegations of manipulation and conspiracy being levelled against central authorities, even as the matter continues to unfold in court.
