India marks Civil Services Day with focus on citizen-centric governance and Viksit Bharat vision

April 20, 2026: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan will address civil servants across the country on the occasion of Civil Services Day on Tuesday in New Delhi. Observed annually, the day serves as a reminder for bureaucrats to reaffirm their commitment to public service, excellence, and citizen welfare. The event will be held at Vigyan Bhawan, where the Vice President will deliver the keynote address.

Civil Services Day traces its origin to 1947, when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed probationers of the administrative services, famously calling civil servants the “steel frame of India.” The occasion continues to inspire officials to strengthen citizen-centric governance. This year’s theme, “Viksit Bharat: Citizen-Centric Governance and Development at the Last Mile,” aligns with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and inclusive development.

The inaugural session will also feature Union Minister Jitendra Singh and Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan. The programme includes panel discussions and thematic sessions chaired by leaders like Jitan Ram Manjhi, Jagat Prakash Nadda, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Key topics range from sustainable livelihoods and healthcare to farmers’ financial security and India’s net-zero goals, bringing together policymakers and experts to enhance governance and last-mile service delivery.
