Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said his controversial remarks were aimed at people using fake degrees to enter respected professions

May 16, 2026: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has clarified his recent remarks that triggered controversy over the use of the terms “cockroach” and “parasite,” saying his comments were taken out of context and were never directed at India’s youth. In a statement, Justice Surya Kant said certain sections of the media had misrepresented his observations made during a court hearing. He explained that the remarks were aimed at individuals using forged degrees to enter respected professions such as law and media, thereby denying deserving young people fair opportunities.

“I did not criticise the youth of this country. I was referring to people who have entered respected professions, including advocacy and media, using forged degrees. I described such individuals as ‘parasites’ on society,” the Chief Justice said. He also stressed that he has immense faith in India’s younger generation and considers them the backbone of a developed India. “Every young person inspires me. I consider both present and future generations as pillars of a developed India,” he added.

The controversy began during a hearing on May 15 when Justice Surya Kant reprimanded a petitioner over the issue of senior advocate designation and criticised the Bar Council of India for allegedly failing to properly scrutinise fake degree holders entering the legal profession. During the hearing, he remarked that some people behave “like cockroaches” and later enter activism or media to attack others after failing to secure professional positions. The comments drew criticism from several quarters, with many alleging that the remarks insulted unemployed youth and social activists.
