Congress announced VD Satheesan as Kerala’s new chief minister after extensive discussions with party leaders following the UDF’s victory in the Assembly elections.
May 14, 2026: VD Satheesan is set to become the new chief minister of Kerala after the Indian National Congress made the official announcement on Thursday, May 14. The decision comes nearly ten days after the Congress-led United Democratic Front defeated the Left government in the Assembly elections, ending a decade of Left rule in the state.
The delay in naming the chief minister had triggered political discussions in Kerala, especially as other states had already formed their governments after the May 4 election results. Congress leaders from Kerala, including senior members of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, held multiple meetings with the party high command in Delhi before finalising the decision.
Apart from Satheesan, senior Congress leaders KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala were also considered frontrunners for the top post. With Satheesan now chosen as the CM face, the Congress is expected to begin the process of government formation in Kerala soon.
