The demolition drive follows directions to clear encroachments from the Yamuna floodplain, leaving several families searching for shelter.

June 26, 2026: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) carried out a demolition drive in the Yamuna Bazar area on Thursday, removing several structures identified as encroachments on the Yamuna floodplain. The area falls under the protected O-Zone, where construction is prohibited. The action follows directions linked to the National Green Tribunal, with residents having been served notices asking them to vacate the area before the demolition.

As bulldozers moved in, residents were seen carrying away whatever belongings they could save. Some alleged that authorities did not allow trucks or transport vehicles into the area to help them shift their possessions. Many families expressed uncertainty about where they would relocate. Residents said they were advised to move into nearby shelter homes, though several claimed those facilities were unsuitable or unsafe for their families.

The demolition has also affected people whose livelihoods depend on the Yamuna. Boat operator Nishadraj said around 100 families engaged in ferry services and religious activities along the river have been impacted. He said officials had informed them about the clearance drive two days earlier. While residents voiced concerns over displacement and loss of livelihood, the DDA had not issued an official response on the matter at the time of reporting.
