The Government of Delhi has advised private companies to implement two days of work from home every week
May 17, 2026: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for austerity measures amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, the Government of Delhi has urged private firms to allow employees to work from home for at least two days a week. The advisory, issued by Delhi’s labour department, also recommends staggered office timings, carpooling and greater use of public transport to reduce fuel consumption in the national capital.
According to the advisory, commuting remains one of the biggest contributors to daily fuel use in Delhi, making work-from-home arrangements an effective conservation strategy. Essential services such as hospitals, electricity, water and sanitation services have been exempted from the recommendation. The government also highlighted that remote working had already proven operationally feasible during the COVID-19 pandemic and GRAP restrictions.
To support the move towards public transport, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is set to introduce additional train trips beginning May 18. The Delhi government has already implemented work-from-home measures for government employees, alongside restrictions on official foreign travel. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also launched the 90-day “Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan” campaign to promote fuel-saving initiatives across the city.
