Residents across Delhi-NCR are expected to get relief from the early May heat as cloud cover dominates the skies on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast partly cloudy conditions in the morning, turning overcast by the afternoon. This is likely to keep temperatures in check, with the maximum ranging between 38°C and 41°C—moderate for this time of year.

According to the IMD, very light to light rainfall is expected later in the day, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Wind speeds may reach 30–40 kmph, with gusts of up to 50 kmph, particularly during the afternoon and evening.

Similar weather conditions are expected to persist on Monday, with cloudy skies and intermittent light rain. A yellow alert has been issued for the next two days, urging residents to remain cautious of sudden weather changes, especially strong winds and lightning.

The recent spell of rain and thunderstorms on Saturday brought much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave. Temperatures dropped and overall conditions became more comfortable across several parts of the region.

Weather experts attribute this shift to a fresh western disturbance affecting north India, which is also expected to trigger cyclonic circulation in nearby areas. This system is likely to increase the chances of light rain over the next few days.

As a result, no heatwave conditions are expected in Delhi for at least the coming week. Looking ahead, the IMD has predicted above-normal rainfall across most parts of India in May, except for some eastern and northeastern regions.

The southwest monsoon is expected to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 14 and 16, marking the gradual beginning of the monsoon season.
