Following the Malviya Nagar guesthouse fire that claimed 21 lives, the Delhi government has announced the withdrawal of its Bed

June 4, 2026: The Delhi government has decided to discontinue its Bed and Breakfast (B&B) scheme after a devastating fire at a guesthouse in Malviya Nagar claimed 21 lives, including 11 foreign nationals. The decision comes amid growing concerns over safety standards and regulatory oversight of small hospitality establishments operating under the programme. Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra announced that all registered properties will be inspected and strict action will be taken against those violating prescribed norms.

As part of the government’s response, a comprehensive review of all B&B establishments has been launched. Officials will examine building compliance, occupancy limits and adherence to fire safety regulations. Mishra stated that the scheme is being withdrawn and warned that any property operating more than six rooms under the programme would face licence cancellation. The move follows public scrutiny over alleged safety lapses exposed by the fatal fire incident.

The Bed and Breakfast scheme was introduced by the Delhi Tourism Department ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games during the tenure of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. It was designed to address accommodation shortages by allowing homeowners to rent rooms to visitors. Under the policy, owners or caretakers were required to reside on the premises, with a maximum limit of eight rooms and 16 beds. The government is now reassessing the framework in light of safety concerns raised by the tragedy.
