Pushkar Singh Dhami orders probe and verification of madrasas across Uttarakhand after viral video raises concerns
April 17, 2026: The Uttarakhand government has ordered an immediate investigation into a viral video claiming that children from other states are being brought into madrasas. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the issue is sensitive and stressed that child safety, transparency, and rule compliance remain top priorities. He added that strict action would be taken if any irregularities are found.
Authorities have directed district magistrates in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Nainital to carry out a detailed verification drive. Officials will examine the origin of children, parental consent, and the role of individuals facilitating their movement. A statewide inspection of all madrasas has also been ordered to ensure compliance, with 452 registered institutions currently operating in the state.
Meanwhile, the government highlighted that under the Uttarakhand Minority Education Act, 2025, the Madrasa Board will be dissolved from July 1, 2026. All madrasas will then need to affiliate with the Uttarakhand Board of School Education and obtain recognition from the Minority Education Authority. The move is aimed at improving transparency, education standards, and safeguarding children’s interests.
