Political tensions flare in Bhabanipur as BJP questions presence of TMC vehicle near counting centre ahead of results
May 1, 2026: Tensions escalated outside a counting centre in Kolkata’s Bhabanipur after a vehicle linked to the All India Trinamool Congress was spotted near the premises. The incident occurred outside Sakhawat Memorial School, which is being used as a counting centre and EVM strongroom. Bharatiya Janata Party workers gathered at the spot, demanding the vehicle be opened for inspection, alleging possible irregularities ahead of vote counting on May 4.
According to visuals shared by ANI, BJP supporters surrounded the vehicle and attempted to stop it from moving, raising slogans and expressing suspicion about its contents. Some workers alleged that the vehicle could be carrying materials intended to influence the counting process. The situation quickly turned tense, with both sides trading accusations over possible tampering.
The row comes amid heightened political friction following the final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the site after receiving complaints and warned against any attempt to tamper with the counting process. Meanwhile, the Election Commission maintained that all EVM strongrooms were sealed under strict security, clarifying that any movement seen was part of authorised procedures related to postal ballots.
