Fresh incidents of violence and crude bomb blasts in Howrah and Murshidabad have heightened concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal.

May 8, 2026: Fresh violence has been reported from several parts of West Bengal, including Howrah and Murshidabad, amid rising political tensions in the state. In Howrah’s Shivpur area, clashes allegedly broke out between supporters of rival political groups and escalated into crude bomb attacks. Eyewitnesses reported panic in the locality as multiple explosions were heard, forcing several residents to flee while others stayed indoors fearing further violence.

According to reports, at least two people linked to one political faction were injured during the clashes. Police personnel along with the Rapid Action Force reached the area shortly after the incident and brought the situation under control. Security was tightened across Shivpur, and search operations were launched to identify those responsible for the violence and bomb attacks.

In a separate incident in Murshidabad, a crude bomb exploded near a water body while explosive materials were allegedly being disposed of. A youth identified as Ramzan Sheikh suffered serious injuries, including severe damage to both hands, and was rushed to hospital for treatment. Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion may have occurred accidentally while explosives were being moved or dismantled. Authorities have intensified patrolling in sensitive areas as investigations continue into the recent rise in violent incidents across the region.
