A fresh, albeit feeble, Western Disturbance is approaching northwest India, set to trigger a change in the weather pattern across several states.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system will interact with easterly winds, leading to isolated dust storms, lightning, and brief spells of rain and thundershowers between May 11 and May 14, 2026.
Residents in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan should prepare for gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 km/h. While some online reports have categorized the system as severe, satellite imagery confirms it is a relatively weak disturbance. However, it is potent enough to reduce visibility significantly during dust storms, potentially disrupting local travel and flight operations at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
Impact and Relief from Heat
The impending weather activity is expected to provide temporary respite from the escalating summer heat. Temperatures in Delhi, which are predicted to climb as high as 42°C to 45°C later this week, may see a brief dip during active thundershower periods. Conversely, higher altitudes in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh may experience isolated hailstorms on May 11 and 12.
Authorities have advised citizens to stay indoors during peak wind activity and avoid standing under tall structures or weak trees. Students traveling for competitive exams are urged to keep a buffer for potential travel delays caused by sudden weather shifts.
